Foodie Friday – Sylvan Beach Summer Soup

Once again, while looking for one thing I found something completely different….

Back in college, I got a little recipe booklet from the Imperial Sugar company which was full of recipes from around the state of Texas. One of the recipes apparently used to be served back in the day at the Sylvan Beach Pavilion in my hometown of La Porte, Texas.

By the time we moved to La Porte, they weren’t serving fancy luncheons there any more, but the pavilion was the site of many functions while I was growing up, including parties after high school graduations.  Whenever we go back to La Porte to visit friends and family, I still enjoy going to Sylvan Beach and revisiting one of my favorite old hangouts.

The pavilion was damaged during Hurricane Ike, but in October, 2013, it reopened after a big renovation which restored the pavilion to its former glory. I hope that many, many more generations of South Texans are able to have as much fun at the restored pavilion as past generations did at the original pavilion.

I don’t know why, but music like this just makes me think of summer.  This is just lots and lots of fun!

The talented group of singers/dancers is called “Burn the Floor“.  You can get a copy of their “Best Of Burn the Floor Soundtrack” on MP3, as well as DVDs of both their 2000 (“Burn The Floor“) and 2008 (“Floor Play“) shows.

Burn the Floor has a traveling troupe on the Norwegian Cruise Ship “Breakaway“; might be time to take Paul up on that offer to take a cruise “One of these days”….. 😛

Foodie Friday – Loaves and “Fish” Sticks

Since my favorite fella has a birthday coming up, I thought it might be nice to share the recipe of one of his all-time favorites with everyone.

Way back in the day, Paul’s Grandma Nettie started making this recipe for her family.  Being a good Catholic, Nettie followed the rule about not eating meat on Fridays.  For a farming family with 8 growing children living in a remote landlocked town, fish – which was the Church’s recommended food of choice on Fridays – was a bit of a luxury.

So Nettie came up with an idea: while staying within the letter of the edict of not serving meat on Fridays – and in the “spirit” of serving fish – she came up with a tradition that has since been passed down through several generations of the Koch clan.

Happy Birthday to a Very Special Little Girl

On July 10, 2001, we welcomed Rebecca Claire into the world.  She was absolutely perfect – another beautiful daughter.  A few hours after her birth, our pediatrician gently informed us that Rebecca had been born with Down syndrome.  The next 48 hours were a real emotional roller coaster.  We cried, we asked ourselves, “Why?”, and we prayed.  A lot.

Paul and Sarah were watching Kill Bill, Volume 2 a while back, and this song played as the credits rolled. Thanks to the Internet, I was able to find a list of the songs on the movie soundtrack, and from there it was just a hop, skip, and a jump to Amazon and YouTube to figure out which song I was looking for.
