Saint Patrick’s Day meets Sesame Street

I tried to find this version of "Danny Boy" (Garrett Morris, SNL, 03/18/78), but it's behind a paywall at Hulu...

One of the reasons that I love Saint Patrick’s Day is because it gives me an excuse to listen to one of my all-time favorite songs, “Danny Boy“.

If there were ever any doubt about my ancestry (I’ve got some “Kelly” and “Carroll” in my family tree), the way that this tune makes me feel like I’ve “come home” puts that to rest – there is no denying that music from the British Isles is the kind of music that stirs my soul.

In putting this post together, I listened to a LOT of different versions of the song, and I ran across one that surprised me. You see, I’ve only ever known Bob McGrath as a performer on “Sesame Street” – I didn’t have a CLUE that he had such an amazing voice!

When I heard this version, I knew that I had found “the one” (I apologize for the video quality – the audio is pristine):

Beware The Ides of March….

Friends, Romans, Countrymen, lend me your ears…

Caesar: Who is it in the press that calls on me? I hear a tongue shriller than all the music Cry “Caesar!” Speak, Caesar is turn’d to hear.
Soothsayer: Beware the ides of March.
Caesar: What man is that?
Brutus: A soothsayer bids you beware the ides of March.
Julius Caesar Act 1, scene 2, 15–19

…hope your day goes better than this guy’s did, back in 44 B.C.:

Fisking Fluke’s Fables

Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed a very disturbing trend among law school students recently?

I mean, it seems like every time some young advocate gets some face time in front of a camera, he/she is telling the most outrageous stories, and the press just eats it up.

The latest case in point is Ms. Sandra Fluke (rhymes with “luck”), a 3rd-year Law Student at Georgetown University. Ms. Fluke recently testified in front of Nancy Pelosi’s one-woman dog and pony show about why Congress should mandate that all insurance companies provide birth control free of charge.

Fun With (Adult) Kids

My parents didn’t get to have the kind of fun that my generation is having with all of the new media. Instead of getting newspaper articles in the mail (for our kids to roll their eyes at, then throw away), we can instantly send them well-meaning articles and then pat ourselves on the back for having done our job. Our kids, of course, just delete those posts without reading them, but the important thing is WE TRIED.

It’s fun to see what great senses of humor our kids have – DD#3 sent me this the other day:

Happy 80th Birthday, Dad!

Today is my Dad’s 80th birthday. I can’t tell you how very glad I am that he is still here to celebrate with us – so many of our friends don’t have their parents around anymore, and Paul and I are fortunate enough to have both our Moms and our Dads around to share good times with.

Pay to Play (or, No, I Don’t Want to Subsidize Your Sex Life)

.
Sandra Fluke’s parents must be so proud.

On Monday, she went before a House Subcommittee to tell everyone that she has sex. Lots and lots of sex. Why, she has so much sex that it costs her $1000/year to pay for birth control.

And gee willikers, she just can’t afford to pay for that, so she thinks that the American taxpayer should pick up the tab.

Cats With Culture – “Duetto buffo di due gatti”

In honor of Gioachino Rossini’s birthday, I wanted to share this adorable performance of a piece that has been attributed to him, affectionately known as “The Cat Duet”.

While this piece is normally performed by two women (I had more fun singing this, way back when), these two little boys would steal any show!
