Boy Meets Girl, 1979 (aka “How I Met Your Mother”)

.

Just a couple of kids…..

.
It started in a lecture hall at Texas A&M University in January, 1979. Yours truly was a freshman who started out in Pre-Med, but after one semester – and a tearful call home – I had decided to change my major to one which involved more math: Civil Engineering.

Well, the powers that be in the Engineering department told me that the Calculus class that I had placed out of as a Science major wasn’t really “the same as” the one they wanted Engineering majors to take, so I had to start all over again. I hadn’t changed my major until the spring semester started, so I missed the first “official” day of that class.

The next time that class met, I was sitting in a seat in the lecture hall, feeling quite lost since I didn’t know the professor’s name, office hours, etc. Some guy came in a little late to the class, looking all harried, and sat down in one of the few empty seats – right next to me.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Victorian Couple

On Valentine’s Day, some people send their sweethearts flowers, give them a romantic card, get them candy, and/or take them to a fancy restaurant where they tempt them with expensive food and drink.

“One Grain More” (aka Making Food Allergies Fun)

onegrainmore-thumb-560x306

….We’ll discover foods that even vegans have forsworn…..

As anyone with food allergies knows, navigating restaurants and grocery stores can be a real challenge – especially when you are first starting out. When Rebecca was diagnosed with Celiac Disease in 2008, we got a crash course in gluten-free living and “Alternative Foods” – it’s been a real education!

I have to give credit to all of our friends and family – they’ve been very patient with us on this journey, and they are always sending us stuff that they think might be of interest to us. Yesterday I opened my e-mail and discovered this link from one of my Cyberfriends***:

The Classics Endure – “Stairway to Heaven”

.
Stairway to Heaven.
All I can say is, “WOW…..” – Ann and Nancy Wilson of “Heart“, along with Jason Bonham (the son of Led Zeppelin’s late drummer) and an amazing band/back-up singers take an all-time rock-and-roll classic and bring down the house at the 2012 Kennedy Center Honors:

Funnies From My Family

Make-em-laugh.
Well, everything that’s going on in Washington is too depressing to deal with, so here’s some funny stuff sent to me by various family members that will hopefully cheer everyone up:

From my Mom:

In the hospital the relatives gathered in the waiting room, where a family
member lay gravely ill. Finally, the doctor came in looking tired and
somber.

”I’m afraid I’m the bearer of bad news,” he said as he surveyed the worried
faces. “The only hope left for your loved one at this time is a brain
transplant. It’s an experimental procedure, very risky, but it is the only
hope. Insurance will cover the procedure, but you will have to pay for the
BRAIN.”

The family members sat silent as they absorbed the news. After a time,
someone asked, ‘How much will a brain cost?’

The doctor quickly responded, ‘$5,000 for a Democrat’s brain; $200 for a
Republican’s brain.’

Super Bowl Sunday: Go Ravens! (We have our reasons…..)

.
superbowl
Paul and I love to watch football. Today is the “Big Day“, and I have to admit, we’re sort of hoping that the Baltimore Ravens win – not because we’ve followed their season or know any of the team’s stats, mind you; no, we have a very silly reason for our support:

Classic Movie Night – “North by Northwest”

North by Northwest Movie Poster

Tonight, Sarah is in for a real treat – I’m taking her to see that perennial Hitchcock favorite, “North by Northwest“.

This movie has it all – planes, trains, and automobiles; mistaken identities and invented identities; a debonair leading man, truly evil bad guys, a femme fatale who isn’t all she seems; a plot with more twists and turns than a mountain road; and a climactic chase scene that takes place on Mount Rushmore.

Speaking of Lethal Weapons…..

Man-holding-assault-rifle

While this Colt AR-15 A3 Tactical Carbine may look scary to those who aren’t wllling to take the time to educate themselves, it is in no way an “assault rifle” – under US law, no lower receiver may have the capability of shooting more than one shot per trigger pull (per the National Firearms act).
The AR-15 was first manufactured in 1957.

Liberals are all gung-ho about removing scary “assault weapons” from the hands of law-abiding citizens – they say that we shouldn’t have the “right” to purchase anything that has the potential to kill dozens of people at a time…..

Classic Movie Night: Gone With The Wind

Gone With The Wind

**********************************************

Tonight – thanks to Retro Cinema at our local Movie Tavern – I get to share one of the all-time movie classics with Sarah: “Gone With The Wind“.  She’s never seen it before, so I hope that she enjoys it; so far, she’s liked all of the old movies that I’ve dragged her to see….

But, honestly – what’s not to love?  This film is a sweeping epic that has it all – romance, intrigue, family, friendship, good times, bad times – all told against a larger-than-life background.  The cast is top-notch, the costumes are amazing, the cinematography is stunning, and the story is timeless.

Once seen, who can forget the first time the audience gets a glimpse of Rhett Butler, Aunt Pitty-Pat having an attack of the vapors at the ball, Prissy screaming “I don’t know nothin’ bout birthing babies!”, Ashley and Melanie running towards each other (OK, that one is kinda cheesy), Rhett sweeping Scarlett off her feet and carrying her up the staircase…..the list goes on and on.

And, of course, that most famous of all movie lines, “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.” Continue reading

Gaming the System

Portrait of the Author in Repose

So it’s the beginning of a new year, and Paul’s employer has teamed up with Virgin HealthMiles to encourage their employees and their families to “Be Healthy”.

What a crock.

You sign up and they send you a pedometer that will track the number of steps that you take each day. According to them, the more steps you take, the more weight you will lose, and the healthier you will be. And if you take enough steps each day, at the end of the year, the company will credit you with $100 toward your Health Insurance Deductible.

Which is good, because our health insurance payments went up $100 a month (even though Obama promised they wouldn’t).
