Tonight, Sarah is in for a real treat – I’m taking her to see that perennial Hitchcock favorite, “North by Northwest“.
This movie has it all – planes, trains, and automobiles; mistaken identities and invented identities; a debonair leading man, truly evil bad guys, a femme fatale who isn’t all she seems; a plot with more twists and turns than a mountain road; and a climactic chase scene that takes place on Mount Rushmore.
Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, the cast is superb: Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint, James Mason, lanky newcomer Martin Landau and the delightful Jessie Royce Landis. With its first-rate cinematography, eye-popping scenery, taut storyline, and the perfect mix of light-hearted comedy and edge-of-your-seat drama, it’s easy to see why audiences have consistently rated “North by Northwest” one of Hollywood’s best films for more than 50 years.
And, of course, this movie is responsible for one of the most iconic images in screen history: Cary Grant being chased by a crop duster through an empty cornfield out in the middle of nowhere:
They don’t make ’em like this anymore….

I love “North by Northwest”!

Sarah really enjoyed it, too – I had forgotten all of the “minor” plot elements, so it was fun to go, “Oh, yeah – I love this part!” when they came up.
In 3 weeks, they are showing “To Catch A Thief” – another one of my all-time faves.
And yes, I’m dragging Sarah to see that one as well….. 😛

Sometimes I think she just goes with me because she likes the mini-hamburgers they have there.
And the Oreo milkshakes.
And the brownie sundaes.
And the fact that I pay for it.
But we do have a lot of fun, and hopefully when it comes time to pick out a retirement home, she will remember all of those brownie sundaes….. 😛
