Tuesday Tunes – “You’ll Never Walk Alone”

You'll Never Walk Alone 6

© Istvan Penzes, 2011

This is one of those songs that truly stands the test of time.

Audiences first heard this beautiful song on Broadway in 1945 – and it became an instant classic. Many performers have made this song part of their repertoire, but my personal favorite is this version sung by American contralto Claramae Turner in the 1956 movie adaptation of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Carousel” (her only screen performance):

.

Gerry and the Pacemakers had their 3rd UK Number One hit with this song in 1963:

.

And here’s a great example of group participation – while this song has been the “signature tune” of England’s Liverpool Football Club since 1965, it has also been adopted by fans throughout Europe and Great Britain; this performance by Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja (and friends) is from the 2012 “Last Night of the Proms“:

.

“You’ll Never Walk Alone” sung by Claramae Turner is available on CD and MP3 formats; Gerry and the Pacemakers version is also available on CD and MP3 formats.
