One man’s vote declared that The Government can tax its citizens for not purchasing a good or a service.
And under the law that was upheld, one person – namely the unelected, politically-appointed Secretary of Health and Human Services – gets to decide which goods and services will be provided under that law (and more importantly, which goods and services will NOT be provided).
Congratulations, America – your healthcare system just became a tyrannical dictatorship.
For you see, the Department of Health and Human Services is filled with people who were not elected to serve there, so the people who work there are beholden to no voter. It won’t matter what you want in terms of healthcare – from now on, the Government will dictate what services you can and cannot receive.
The Director of Health and Human Services just became the most powerful person in the land.
Don’t think for a minute that whoever holds that position will have the average American’s health in mind when they start making their rulings. The HHS Director will be beholden to his or her boss – the President of the United States – and they know good and well that if they want to keep their job, they had better toe the party line.
Like it or not, the HHS Secretary WILL be able to be “bought” – albeit indirectly – because they are going to do whatever the big political donors tell the President that he/she has to do to keep getting the big bucks donated to their campaign coffers (the average tenure for an HHS Secretary has been 2.8 years; since 1989, however, all HHS Secretaries have served at least one full term).
I don’t know about you, but I do not want my healthcare decisions being made by someone who is worried about keeping their job – I want my healthcare decisions to be made by me and my doctor.
You may find it somewhat troubling – as I did – that of the 21 people who have served as either HEW or HHS Secretaries since this Cabinet post was created, only 2 have had Medical degrees. The rest had no medical training whatsoever.
From now on, any number of nameless, faceless bureaucrats will be responsible for deciding which services are too expensive, which services are deemed “scientifically worthy”, which protocols will be followed, and so on. It’s going to be “Healthcare by Committee”, and you will pay for it whether you like what you are paying for or not.
Don’t think for a minute that you will just be able to “independently” contract with a doctor to obtain a service that isn’t on “The List” – if England and Canada are any indication, it will be AGAINST THE LAW for a citizen to do anything that the government doesn’t specifically say that they can do.
The saddest thing is that every child born in America from this point forward will never know what it was like to be able to choose their own doctor and to make their own healthcare decisions – since they will only ever know government-run healthcare, they won’t know that there used to be a better alternative.
Might as well get used to taking a number, folks – we’re all going to be in the waiting room for a long time.
