Washers and Dryers and Scorpions (Oh, My!)

..
You’ve all heard that old saying, “When it rains, it pours”…..

Our washing machine gave up the ghost yesterday. It had been giving us hints the past week or so, but when it sounded “wrong” yesterday afternoon, I went in to investigate and promptly got my feet all wet stepping in the water that was running out onto the floor.

Nothing I hate more than wet socks….
.
.
After changing my socks and jeans (‘cuz the hems of those got wet, too), Paul and I got ready to go to the store to buy a replacement. It’s time, and I still have memories of all of the weekends that my Dad spent “working” on the washer/dryer/dishwasher growing up. I’ve got better things for Paul to do around the house since I am no longer able to do as much around here.

Just as we were about to leave the house, the phone rang. The number that popped up on the Caller ID indicated that Michelle was calling. Now, Michelle usually only calls when it’s an “emergency”, so I was wondering what was going on.
.

.
It turns out that she had been stung by a scorpion the day before, and now she was starting to have numbness in her mouth and extremities – she wondered if she should find a doctor to go see down in College Station.

And here I thought we were going to be getting one of these calls after a venomous snake bit her….
.

Actual Facebook conversation between the sisters:

Sarah: You might want to go to the hospital or something.

Michelle: It was a striped bark scorpion. Only known deaths occurred because of anaphylactic shock rather than the venom. I should be fine in a couple of days.

Sarah: If you die, I’m having “I should be fine in a couple of days” engraved on your tombstone.

Michelle: That would be awesome.

.
After insisting that she go to the local ER, we had to call the insurance company to make sure that an ER visit would be covered during “normal” business hours (yes, thankfully), we were finally able to get to Lowe’s to pick out a washer/dryer set. (Before you ask – the dryer is working just fine, but it is due to go out, and I want a matching set. With my luck, by the time it goes out on its own, the matching model will no longer be made, and I would have to go 10+ more years with a mismatched set)

So next Friday, we should be having our new washer/dryer (with pedestals!) delivered and installed.

I just hope they fit through the laundry room door….. 😛

Oh dear — hope Michelle is okay!

    • Yep – the ER sent her home with some Benadryl cream and told her to take some OTC Benadryl and Tylenol as needed.
If she’d been closer to home, I would have had her come here and just kept an eye on her, but she’s too far away for that.

So now we get to pay a $650 deductible for her to be told, “Take 2 aspirin and call me in the morning….” 😛

Oh, well – better safe than sorry!

Glad she’s okay. (p.s. I love the cartoons!)

      • Thanks – we’re glad, too!

I had more fun finding the “right” cartoons for this post – of course, it takes me FOREVER to get my posts finished, because in looking for pictures for them, I get pulled in to the image searches – it’s like spending a day in the library stacks.

Mild ADD, extreme curiousity, and obsessive word-crafting are a bad mix for (self-imposed) deadlines…..

Don’t ya just hate the ER bills. See a doctor for five minutes and get a bill for $450.00, plus a $2,000.00 ER bill. All for an hour visit. At least that’s been my experience when ever I had a Kidney Stone attack. I did like the pain killing cocktail they make, though. 😉

Great blog, by the way. Got here from the link at TOM.

    • Hubby had a kidney stone attack once – I think he would have sold one of the kids to pay for pain relief; those are nasty little suckers!
(I had gallstones, so I was quite sympathetic)

We are fortunate that we don’t have to go to the ER very often – this daughter is 200 miles away at college, so when she said that she was having numbness in her mouth, hands, and feet, I kinda panicked….

Thanks for the kind words about my blog – I’m glad you like it! 😛
